Black Utopia Project
“‘Utopia’ is often used as a pejorative to indicate the failure of a humanist project…
Neither applies here…
Utopia is a state of being and doing.” - Jayna Brown

410 Marcus Garvey Blvd between Halsey and Macon Streets
The GrowHouse Civic Sanctuary is our home for collective imagination and community building in Central Brooklyn. From February through April 2026, we’re opening the doors of this storefront to test what a Black-led civic space can feel like when it is rooted in history, culture, and everyday neighborhood life.
This is a space for people to gather, learn, make, organize, and create together. It is a place where elders share stories, youth build new skills, designers experiment with materials, neighbors shape the future of their blocks, and community members come together across generations and backgrounds.
We see the Civic Sanctuary as a living prototype for what community-owned spaces across the BLAC Ecosystem can become. During these three months, we’re exploring questions that matter in Bed-Stuy today:
What does a welcoming, creative, and civically engaged Black future look like?
How do we build local power through design, culture, and shared stewardship?
What kinds of tools, spaces, and relationships allow a neighborhood to thrive?
How do we honor our history while building what comes next?
Inside the space you’ll find a growing mix of maker tools, archives, workshops, conversations, small performances, neighborhood strategy sessions, community research, and youth-led work. Everything here is experimental by design. We’re learning with and from the community in real time.
Most importantly, the Civic Sanctuary is meant to feel accessible, grounded, and ours. Whether you want to host a small gathering, run a creative workshop, share cultural memory, test a civic idea, or simply bring people together, this space exists for that purpose.
We invite you to help shape what happens here.
